Filmed during a military curfew in Kashmir, Musa Syeed’s lyrical debut feature film follows Gulzar, a young boatman who tries to escape the conflict for a better life in Delhi with his best friend, Afzal. While waiting for the curfew to end, the young men meet Asifa, an environmental scientist studying the growing pollution of the lake, which threatens the livelihood of the local community. As Gulzar’s relationship with Asifa deepens, his friendship with Afzal and his relation to his home begin to change. At once a historical record and a moving, intimate drama, Valley of Saints won two major awards at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.
Introduction and Q&A with the director, Musa Syeed.
